Students will understand the meaning of a story and express this understanding orally and in writing.

COMPONENTS
3.1 Identification of the important elements of a story: characters, plot, sequence of events.
3.2 Description of the important elements of a story: characters, plot, sequence of events.
3.3 Comparisons: between elements of the story and the student's personal experiences.
3.4 Individual response to the story: feelings about and interest in the story; connexion with memories and experiences.

ACTIVITIES

A. Go to Berit's Best sites for children
Click on "stories".
Click on "Myths and Fables".

B. Choose any one of the sixteen myths and fables from around the world.

C. Students read the story, clicking on the arrows at the bottom to go from one page to the next.

D. Have the students read the story thoroughly and then answer comprehension questions. Questions could deal with the main characters, the conflict involved, how the conflict was resolved, etc.

- A sequencing activity could also be prepared to test their comprehension.

- Elicit questions about the countries where the stories originated.

Choose one story and prepare a written evaluation.

CLASSROOM
MANAGEMENT


Teacher may choose to have all students working on the same story or have each group of two pick a different fable. This activity can be easily adapted for small work stations within the classroom.
