PRE-ACTIVITIES: Introduce students to the Netscape browser.

Print Appendix A.

ACTIVITIES: Students are introduced to the internet through a scavenger hunt.

They go to the first site: http://www.switchboard.com and follow the instructions on the scavenger hunt (Appendix A) for finding their way around on the net.
By simply clicking on the appropriate icons at the site, students will:

- find the e-mail address of a famous person of their choice.

- get their own email address;

CLOSURE: Students get their own email address.

FEEDBACK/EVALUATION: Teacher checks students’ responses on Appendix A.

FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITY: 1. Students correspond with penpals by email.

2. Students become familiar with safety rules on the net. They brainstorm with their teacher and create a list of dos and don’ts when surfing the net.

CLASS MANAGEMENT: This activity can be done with the whole class in the computer lab or in small groups at a computer workstation in the classroom.

SUGGESTIONS AND COMMENTS: The teacher should get parental permission for students to register for their free email address.

To surf the net, do the following exercise:

1. Click on Netscape.

2. Type the following internet address: http://www.switchboard.com/

What is the name of the site?_________________________

3. Click on Finding people to find the e-mail address of a famous person of your choice. This will take you to the cite http://www.switchboard.com/bin/cgiqa.dll?MG=

Type the name of the person.
Type the name of the city where he/she lives.
Click Search

What’s the name of the person?

_________________________

What’s his/her e-mail address?

_________________________

4. To go back to Switchboard, click on ï at the top left corner of your screen.

5. Now click on My Corner. This will take you to the site

In the section my email, click on I want email. This will take you to the site http://webmail.switchboard.com/signup/signup.page.

To give yourself an email address:

Choose and type the first half of your email address (the part before the @ sign).
Go to Free choices. Click on Ú and choose the last half of your email address (the part after the @ sign).
Click on 1 in the section My email signup at the left of the screen.
Go to the bottom of the screen and click Next.

Cool! Now you have your own email address. Write it in your binder.

Click on 2 in the section My email signup.
Click on Store your mail.
Write your name and address and choose a password.
Memorize your password and don’t tell anybody what it is.
